Open Riser Stairs

Stairs, in Ottawa they have to suit the home. We met designer Chuck Mills of Chuck Mills Residential Design & Development while working on the Habitat for Humanity Dream Home. We must have left a a good impression because he asked Amsted Design • Build to bring us in on this project; a maple open riser stair with metal spindles. The homeowners decided to contrast the stair colour to the flooring rather than match it, and it really works in this home. We did four sets of stairs here and the view from the top down is really something to see (unfortunately it is impossible to photograph). The light from the windows on the landings shines right through the stairs into the main hall, making it bright and warm. This is the ideal situation to use an open riser stair. Gone are the days of the single colour, natural wood , hollywood style open riser stairs of the ’70s. These dark maple treads contrasting with the white stringers make a statement while maintaining  very contemporary look.

The key to making this stair work was to keep it open and to keep it simple. We kept the spindles plain, we kept the posts slick, and we tried to make everything as seamless as possible. For the stain colour, we picked the darkest shade of brown from the exotic flooring. The colour of stairs works with the floor and we didn’t have to use the exotic walnut on the stair. We opted to use round spindles so we didn’t have to use any bottom shoes and that clean look really pays off where the spindles meet the flooring. Trust me when I say that we can tailor a stair to fit in any home and working with a great designer makes the process very easy for us and gives the homeowner a stunning finished product.
